Township
Rainbow Beach Township is situated about halfway along a twenty-kilometre stretch of beach sweeping north from Double Island Point to Inskip Point and the entrance to Tin Can Bay and the Great Sandy Straits. The area south of the township is part of the extensive Cooloola National Park that includes the magnificent coloured sand cliffs, so unique to the area.

The town has shops, a hotel, a surf club and a bowling club which includes tennis courts for rent. There are a number of restaurants.

The beach is patrolled at weekends and during the school holidays in an area opposite the town itself. Four wheel drive vehicles are excluded from the surfing area at all times.

Activities
Fishing is a popular activity and the huge stretch of beach offers a variety of locations for beach fishing. For boating enthusiasts, there is a safe launching ramp at Carlo Point situated on Tin Can Bay. There are miles and miles of protected waterways reaching up through the Great Sandy Straits to the northern tip of Fraser Island. Bush walking is a wonderful experience in the Cooloola National Park and can include a short walk to the magnificent Carlo Sandblow or longer walks from the township to the Bymien Picnic Area and on to Lake Poona which is a small "perched" lake. Further on is Lake Freshwater. A walk along the Old Telegraph Track which follows the cliff tops from Rainbow Beach township to Double Island Point and returns via the beach is another wonderful walk that is easily achievable in a matter of several hours.

There are many much longer walks involving overnight camping for more serious bush walkers. The Carlo Sandblow (a short walk from us) provides one of the most exciting venues for hang gliding in Australia with the launching point on the eastern end of the sandblow off a 100-metre cliff. Day tours to World Heritage listed Fraser Island and to the Coloured Sands can be booked through our office. Times for these tours vary according to favourable tides.

Four wheel driving
A four-wheel drive vehicle greatly increases the opportunity for adventure within the Cooloola National Park and it is possible to hire a 4WD through our park office. An off road vehicle enables beach travel and is an exciting way to enjoy the vastness of this beautiful stretch of coastline. However it is possible to reach the Bymien Picnic Area by two-wheel drive and Harry's Hut on the upper reaches of the Noosa River via the Cooloola Way. Harry's Hut is an ideal launching point for the canoeists wishing to paddle the deep tranquil waters of the river with its glorious reflections enhanced by the tannin-stained water .
